A unified government
The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government was formed in 1990 after a vote of the citizens of the former City of Athens and Clarke County. Its tax commissioner bills and collects property taxes for the unified government.
A local homestead exemption
Athens-Clarke offers homestead exemptions it describes as more beneficial to the taxpayer than the state's. They follow the owner who qualified, so a buyer's bill can differ from yours.
Utilities stay in your name until you stop them
The Public Utilities Department holds the account holder responsible for all consumption charges while the account remains in their name. Stop service at closing.
Permits and historic districts
The Building Permits and Inspections Department issues permits for the unified government, and the Historic Preservation Commission oversees local historic districts and landmarks.
