One government since 1971
The City of Columbus merged with Muscogee County in 1971. The Muscogee County Tax Commissioner handles billing, collecting, and disbursing property taxes in the county.
Code and permits
The Inspections and Code Department enforces the building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and property maintenance codes. Permits for past work, and any open code matters, come from that department.
Historic properties
A Certificate of Appropriateness from the Board of Historic and Architectural Review is required for any change in materials or appearance to the exterior of a designated historic property.
Water is a separate utility
Columbus Water Works is a component unit of the consolidated government rather than a city department. Close the water account with Columbus Water Works directly when you sell.
